Daniel Markewich

Daniel Markewich, a graduate of Harvard College (magna cum laude) and Columbia University Law School (cum laude), where he was a Stone Scholar, has been a civil, criminal, and labor litigator for forty years. His diverse civil litigation practice has included insurance coverage, defense, and subrogation, reinsurance, environmental, health, fraud, real estate, matrimonial, employment, contract, tort, entertainment, RICO, breach of fiduciary duty, professional discipline, attorney conflict and malpractice, and pension and labor matters, as well as appeals, administrative hearings, and arbitrations. Mr. Markewich is admitted to the bars of New York State, the United States Supreme Court, the Second and Fourth Circuit Courts of Appeals, and the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. He has tried numerous cases to verdict in state and federal courts throughout the East, and has handled matters in most of the other states as well as several Canadian provinces. Mr. Markewich is general counsel to an international labor union and has served as local or special counsel to other labor organizations, their members, and their benefit funds in labor matters, investigations, and prosecutions. He is one of only a few attorneys in the country experienced in the BIA field preemption defenses to asbestos and other actions against locomotive manufacturers.  A former Assistant District Attorney in New York County, he engages in the defense of white-collar and labor-related criminal cases and has lectured on federal criminal law. Mr. Markewich is a member of the American Bar Association's Litigation and Criminal Practice Sections, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York County Lawyers' Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the New York State Magistrates Association. A former member of the Committee on Professional and Judicial Ethics of the City Bar, and a member of the ABA's Center for Professional Responsibility who advises the firm on ethics issues, Mr. Markewich has also been retained as an expert witness in federal court on attorney ethics and malpractice. He has been listed in Who's Who in American Law. Mr. Markewich was Acting Justice of the Village of South Nyack, New York from 1986 until April of 2002; his opinions have been published in The New York Law Journal and the state law reports and reprinted in The Magistrate and Talk of the Towns magazines.
